Robert HawkerAbout Robert

Robert Hawker has the West Country running through his veins. Born and raised in the Quantock Hills, he grew up with the countryside and land around him. When he left school, he worked in the shooting industry, teaching in shooting schools to start and eventually managing one of the UK’s leading gun shops.

During this time, he realised that there was a right way and a wrong way to do business. He developed a love for on honest advise and great customer service! It’s better to tell a customer that a product is wrong for them rather than to make a sale and have that customer be unhappy. That was going to help him greatly with what he did next.

In 2005 he decided to move back to his roots in the countryside and pursue his love of deer as deer manager on the Highclere Castle estate and running his deer stalking business. Highclere is now famous for being the setting for ITV’s highly-successful Downton Abbey television series.

Robert is very clear about the type of wild venison he provides. “I manage the deer properly”, he says, “I only select those animals that I want to cull each year…I don’t just go out and shoot the first animal I see, it’ll be the right animal…People realise now that deer have to be culled, if the right person is doing it, then it’s safe and ethical”.

His wife Amanda is responsible for administration, with her background in the tourism and food hygiene industries, she’s there to take the orders, organise the logistics and sort out any problems when they occur. His two children pitch in when they can, this really is a family business!
